The Million Wiki Project

The Million Wiki Project aims to create one million new articles and content pieces on Wikimedia projects about the Arab world in different languages within three years. By funding Wikimedians from diverse backgrounds and fostering a collaborative community, we strive to build a diverse and inclusive knowledge platform that reflects the rich cultural heritage and contemporary interests of the Arab world.

Mission

To enrich Wikimedia projects by encouraging Wikimedians to focus on content enrichment through funded projects and contribute one million Wiki contributions to Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects within three years in different languages including Arabic and English.

The Million Wiki Project celebrates diversity and builds bridges of knowledge. We aim to create one million Wikimedia Contributions in different languages related to the Arab world and content, reflecting the rich cultural heritage and contemporary interests of the Arab world. By fostering collaboration and empowering Wikimedians, we strive to democratize access to knowledge and inspire a global community of learners.

Scope of the Project

1. Geographic scope: centered on Wikimedia projects and diverse community members from different geographic background.

2. Content Enrichment: historical, cultural, literature and scientific content enrichment across Wikimedia projects

3. Grant Program: provide funding opportunities for individuals and Groups with innovative project ideas from different background and cultures.

4. Impact: Incorporate robust data collection and evaluation mechanisms to assess the impact and progress of funded projects.

5. localization: localization efforts, focusing on adding content relevant to the UAE and its cultural heritage.

Responsibilities

  • Review and evaluate grant applications from individuals or affiliates applying for funding to carry out their projects.
  • Ensure that proposals align with the project's objectives and contribute to enriching Wikimedia projects in different languages.
  • Set criteria and guidelines for grant selection, considering factors such as impact, feasibility, and community relevance.
  • Make decisions on approving or rejecting grant proposals based on the evaluation process.
  • Monitor the progress of approved projects, provide support, and ensure they adhere to the agreed timelines and budgets.
  • Conduct periodic reviews of grant recipients' final reports, evaluating the outcomes and impact of their projects.

Membership Criteria

Requirements:

1. Sufficient facility with Arabic, English (United Nations languages), for reviewing and discussing grant proposals in Arabic and other languages.

2. Experience with the Wikimedia movement, including experience contributing to at least one Wikimedia project.

3. Experience with Wikimedia programs, in addition to contributions to the online projects and has made at least 50 contributions last month.

4. Committee members must understand and value diversity, including cultural, linguistic, and must be aware of the gender gap in Wikimedia projects and platforms.

5. Commitment to Friendly Space Expectations, and to engaging in supportive dialogue with applicants and grantees.

6. Consistent record of constructive engagement in community discussions, and an orientation toward collaborative problem solving.

7. Committee members must be volunteers who are not paid by the Wikimedia Foundation or any Wikimedia Affiliate. No WMF or affiliate staff may join the committee while they are serving in paid roles.

We would love if you had:

1. Experience implementing programs that incorporate, understand and value diversity, equity including cultural, linguistic, and gender differences.

2. Relevant expertise, such as organizational development, institutional partnerships, or volunteer management.

3. Experience reviewing annual plan grant proposals, or significant experience reviewing other types of grant proposals.

4. A demonstrated commitment to sharing skills and experience and helping others in the Wikimedia movement grow.

5. A passion to Increase geographic, gender, or age diversity in different Wikimedia projects not yet represented.

6. Competence in reading and speaking in multiple languages including but not limited to Arabic and English.
